Displacements

After the revolution and the declaration of independence of Finland in the 1920s, the property of the former Russian owners who left their homes was sold at auctions, many summer cottages were dismantled and transported to other parts of Finland. About 200 buildings were transported to the city of Järvenpää near Helsinki.

I thought about the house as a point of concentration of events in space, as a place that stores some stories or memories. I thought about the connection of the house with the place of construction, about how the house becomes a part of the space around it, changes this space and about what happens when the house is moved to another place. What happens to the space when part of it is torn out. Does some kind of gap form in it or does it simply become the same as before? Does it store something about the past?

I created digital collages, superimposing landscapes taken in different places of Komarovo on each other through the silhouettes of the buildings that were once here. I also photographed abandoned houses, some traces of presence and other objects on Polaroid and use Polaroid emulsion lift process.
